Gutters | Frequently Asked Questions

Cleaning gutters can be hazardous to your health.  Ladders can slip when people reach too far sideways to grab leaves from a gutter.  If you clean gutters while standing on a roof, you can lose your balance and fall.  JR Neely's Gutter Solution can go a long way in preventing many autumn accidents. Read frequently asked questions about gutters and gutter guards below:

Will pine needles, seedlings or other debris find its way into the guttering?

Debris and leaves are mostly blown into open top gutters, which can cause severe clogging and the need for messy gutter cleaning. In most cases, if small bits of debris do enter your gutter, they will flush through the gutters and out the downspout. An annual inspection of the gutters and downspouts is recommended.

What is the purpose of gutters?
Gutters and downspouts prevent water that falls on the roof from dripping down the sides of the house and collecting near the foundation. They also prevent water from sheeting off the roof and falling directly onto people in entrances, driveways, and walkways.

How do gutters get clogged?

Debris which lands on the roof may accumulate in gutters, eventually obstructing water drainage. Leaves are a major source of debris, as well as pine needles, seeds, and small branches. If birds perch on the roof, then their dung may add to the accumulated debris.

What happens when gutters get clogged?

If the drainage function of gutters is compromised, water will spill over and drip down the sides of the house. Eventually, this may damage the siding, windows, and doors; and compromise the building seals that keep your house watertight, resulting in water leaks.

How often should gutters be cleaned?

This varies, depending on the environment. Generally, it’s a good idea to have gutters checked and cleaned once a year. In houses surrounded by trees, it may be necessary to clean out gutters twice a year: in the autumn, after the leaves fall; and in the spring, to clear out dead twigs and seeds that accumulate at the beginning of the growing season.
